VLA 1.4 GHz Survey Results

The preliminary A-array 1.4 GHz survey for pulsar in-beam candidates is now complete. 63 pulsars were surveyed, 1060 sources brighter than a milliJansky were imaged, and 269 potential candidates were identified, including 72 high-quality ones (for 36 pulsars). For background information about this project, see this page.

The table below contains:

The inbeam candidates (all stronger than 3 mJy, and within 25 arcmin) are classified as follows: Here, "compact" implies a judgement that it is either unresolved at 1.4 GHz (VLA-A), or has sufficient flux in a bright core that is likely to survive at VLBA scales. Some sources are promoted or demoted by one group, depending on flux.

* These results are available as a text file.
* The old index page is also available here.
* All result text files and images are also available.
* Automatically generated observe files (see schedator.py below) for follow-up X-band observations: Segment 1 and Segment 2.

Notes about the individual pulsar pages:
  1. After VLA imaging, the output is a text file with information and an EPS image from KNTR + LWPLA. The pulsar should always be field 001 in the text listing. The text file format is:
    # Field name RA Dec Flux RMS Comment
    B0450+55.001    04 54 07.75794  55 43 41.4416   11.57   0.15    Pulsar
    B0450+55.002    04 54 00.08356  55 36 45.3387   225.5   0.18    Core - jet

  2. The RMS noise is from IMEAN's histogram estimate.
    Flux, RA and DEC estimates are from MAXFIT with PIXXY = the peak found by IMEAN.
    This is crude, but quick, and is sufficient for follow-up observations.

  3. Inputs to KNTR:   docont 1; dogrey 0; ltype -3; cbplot 1;
      plev 10; levs -4,-2,-1,1,2,4,8,9.5;

  4. Inputs to LWPLA:   dparm 0 0 0 0 1 5005 31 6 0 0;
      outfile 'FITS:'!!inname!!'.'!!inclass!!'.eps'

  5. The web page is generated from the text results and EPS images in the aips FITS directory, using mkweb.pl, a Perl script. This also generates the required GIF images and calculates the angular separation (D) in arcmin.

  6. The comment field has information about the compactness and suitability as an in-beam candidate.

See the Pulsar VLBI page for background information about this project.
