LSST Informatics and Statistics Science Collaboration

Support material for a new science collaboration proposal

Welcome

This web site contains material in support of a proposal to form a new LSST Informatics and Statistics Science Collaboration that will support and undertake interdisciplinary astronomy/information science research driven by the unique data analysis opportunities and challenges presented by LSST. Such research is urgently needed to facilitate use of LSST data in the astronomy research of other LSST Science Collaborations and of the broader LSST user community. The proposal was submitted in response to the Summer 2009 call for LSST science collaboration applications, overseen by NOAO.

The proposed collaboration is unique in being both interdisciplinary and cross-cutting. The team is comprised of both astronomers and information scientists. Many of the issues to be addressed by the collaboration will arise in the work of multiple other Science Collaborations, so the team's membership includes many members of other Science Collaborations, in addition to members whose main contribution to LSST science will be through this collaboration.

As a consequence, the proposed collaboration has an unusually large, multi-tiered team. The limited space alloted within the proposal would not permit a complete description of the roles of team members and the resources available to the team as a whole. This site hosts a copy of the proposal, and supplementary team information to help reviewers assess the full scope of the proposed collaboration.
