Hot dust in interacting galaxies and active galactic nuclei.

Using data from the Infrared Space Observatory, Vassilis Charmandaris has been studying the mid-infrared properties of a sample of nearby interacting/merging galaxies at various levels of activity. The goal of this project is to identify the often obscured in the optical starburst regions, probe their star formation efficiency, and examine whether one can develop spectral diagnostics which will help us reveal the presence of embedded active galactic nuclei.
